The Porritt House Story

Your new home awaits you 
Looking back on my Nursing Career recently, I remember starting as an impressionable 16 year old. We were all young “Cadet Nurses” and untrained, so our early placements were on the old 50 bedded Geriatric Wards as they were called then.  The odour in the mornings was very unpleasant as simple, worn curtains between beds, with shared commodes, provided limited privacy and definitely NO dignity.
With the very little spare time we did have, when Sister wasn’t watching, we would get chance to talk to patients.  No history books could give you the wealth of understanding that these little conversations gave you, men who had served in the Great War and even some on previous campaigns, women who during those times had coped with what today we might see as insurmountable problems. Family loss, poverty, very young widows with children to support and the struggle of a long hard life made it heart rending to see where life had brought them, and I felt not really nostalgia but abhorrence at their Indignity.  Thank goodness times have changed.
We gave up our lovely 4 bedroom home, along with my post as Community Midwife, and with family in tow, we moved to St Annes, investing Heart, Soul and Bank Balance into our new lives operating Care Homes. No easy task, but our passion to improve things for our clients was a great motivator, and the desire to do so has never left.
Facing the ageing process together, our thoughts were always that if we reached the stage where we needed to sell our home and have daily support, as life had become too difficult to manage ourselves, how and where would we want to live.  As that motivated family, we have created our own unique environment, Porritt House, and we would love to share it with you.
